The art of being an underdog changes people in ways that we often fail to appreciate. It opens doors and creates opportunities and enlightens and permits things that might otherwise seem unthinkable.Malcolm Gladwell
After meeting George, you will know he’s anything but ‘bound’. In a recent article by the South Philly Review, the headline reads ‘Wheelchair Bound South Philly Resident Starts Air Freshening Business’.
While he loves the earned media and the revenue uptick that accompanies the recognition, he was puzzled saying: I don’t feel ‘bound’. And, there it is. I think what we continue to learn from George is that ‘language creates reality’ (among so many other things). So collectively, we have agreed to say ‘underdog’ instead. Because true to underdog nature, there’s a good story in the rise to the top.
Like many, George spent his early life in an institution. Using true grit, he advocated his way out of living in a place that he didn’t feel was right for him. He worked in sheltered environments and eventually started a successful small business. He let IDEATE share that with him. With the help of a robotic arm, the mechanical tasks of packaging is something he does with minimal support.

This system consists of a DOBOT Magician and a customized game controller that makes it move. The DOBOT Magician is a multifunctional desktop robotic arm for practical training education. Installed with different end-tools, DOBOT Magician can realize interesting functions such as 3D printing, laser engraving, writing and drawing. It supports secondary development by 13 extensible interfaces and over 20 programming languages, which really makes your creativity and imagination increase without any limitation.
And we’re not done developing yet. Current experimentation has allowed us to hypothesize that we can move the arm on a grid to create more function across a surface area 9x larger that the DOBOT’s range of motion.
